Sew Aiken's Current Projects

We will always have three projects going on at a time, do as little or as much as you want. Don't like any of the projects? Bring in your own, we would love to see what you're working on.

*Your Sewing Supplies would consist of things like:

sewing machine and/or needles

measuring tape

pins, pin cushion

seam ripper

scissors

fabric marker (like mark-be-gone) or tailors chalk

whatever it is you can't live without when you sew

 Monthly Project:

We are making our first actual piece of clothing as a group. Skirts! Simple elastic waisted skirts. Directions will be handed out at the meeting and below is your shopping list. Try drawing out a couple of ideas and designs. These skirts are very versatile.

Shopping List:

Fabric - Deciding the amount of material depends on your design. If you want a long or fuller skirt you will need more material than a shorter straighter skirt. If you bring 2 yards of fabric you will have enough for most skirts.

Elastic - 1/2" to 3/4" elastic is suitable. Long enough to circle around you where the skirt will sit.

Trim (optional) - If you desire lace or ruffles, chains or buttons, contrasting ribbon or bows make sure you purchase enough supplies.

 Autumn Project:

Want a way to keep that autumn chill off your shoulders, but not ready to pull out your coats yet? Upcycle a sweater and make yourself a capelet! Below is a great how-to video by Today in Jen's Sewing Room she made for Thread Banger. There are so many ties, frogs, buttons, and colors you could use that no two would ever be the same. If your in need of a large man's sweater for this project Goodwill has hundreds on their racks.

 Community Project:

Inspired by the ASG's recent (9-07-09) display at the Aiken County Public Library and Sara (Thanks Sara!) Sew Aiken's new community project are Fidget Quilts. Fidget quilts are used by Alzheimers patients to relieve anxiety and keep their minds active by using touch and sensory stimulation. They are small lap size blankets or pads that have a variety of fabrics and accsesories on them to keep hands busy. They are great for beginning crafters because you get to experiement with zippers, pockets, bindings, and hand sewing techniques. They do not have to be quilted. There will be handouts at every meeting if you are interested.
