Seasonal Project - Summer '09

September 6, 2009

The summer project this year is a cute summer top made from a man's recycled button up shirt. You can get the instruction sheet at any of the meetings. The list of materials is below in case you wanted to work on it during the meeting.

Shopping List:

  • Men's dress shirt (choose one that fits you loosely)
  • Elastic, 1/4-inch-wide
  • Thread
  • Contrasting buttons (same size as those on the shirt)
  • Twill tape or ribbon, 1/2-inch-wide, 1 1/2 yards
  • Your sewing supplies*

The instructions also call for fabric paint and paintbrush, fabric glue, and fabric-friendly glitter to "draw" a flower on the breast of the shirt. Alternatives to this could be iron-on patches (about the size of your palm or smaller), hand embroidery, applique, or nothing at all. The top would be cute without it.

Don't have an oversized man's button-up shirt? Goodwill is a great place to pick one up. They have a HUGE selection of men's shirts.

Bandanas!

Pick one project, pick four! The projects are listed roughly by difficulty, easiest being on the top. If you want more details about a project before the next meeting, email here. Hobby Lobby has a large selection of bandanas, Walmart carries them, haven't checked Target, but there would be time to order some online if you just can't find what you are looking for. Go to Sew Aiken's Links for stores that sell bandanas.

The project for the next meeting will be aprons. Yay aprons! Needed for cooking, butchering, crafting, or the badge of a hostess, these versatile cloth protectors are easy to make and can be as simple as a canvas square, or as elaborate as three rows of taffeta ruffles with four pockets and an adjustable bib strap.

What To Bring:

  • 1 or 2 yards of fabric
  • Thread
  • Notions (lace, hem tape, ribbon, trim, buttons, snaps, anything you want to put on your apron)
  • Your sewing supplies*
