Sharing space and ideas

Sew Aiken has been asked to share meeting space during the next meeting on September 5th. Since projects for that day don't require sewing machines please leave yours at home, we just won't have the room.

Visit the Current Projects page to see the small list of supplies for the teacup pincushion and the felt needle book. And I mean a small list! If you bring nothing but a teacup and a few pieces of felt you can do both projects.

There will be a lot of handouts this time in recognition of National Sewing Month. This meeting will be a good time to share sewing tips and techniques, future projects, and design ideas.

Sewing Through the Ages

What a great diversity of ages we have in our group. We had a first time seamstress, N'Kyesha, and hope she will come back to learn more. I (Athena) had a blast and hope everyone else did too. Can't wait for the next meeting on August 1st, when we will make things out of bandanas. You can see project details on our Current Projects page.

The aprons were fun, everyone had such different fabrics and ideas. Lynna finished her apron during the meeting and everyone else got really good starts. When you finish them email pics or bring the apron to the next meeting so we can Oooo and Ahhhh over them.

You asked for some links and you got 'em. If you find a great site that's not listed, email and it will be added. Sew Aiken is keeping their favorite links on delicious where it's easy to organize a growing list. (wow, that kinda sounded like an ad)

You also said you would like pictures on your site and now you have a page for them. Click the photo to make it bigger, then click the title of the pic if you want to see descriptions or leave a comment.

On Friday, July 10th, Burda Style blogged about our Sew Aiken group! We truly are a part of their sewing community and they have made us feel very welcome. You can join Burda Style here and join the BSC Sew Aiken sister site here, where Sew Aiken has their very own page.

Sales of interest:

Hobby Lobby is having chiffon 50% of this week (July 13th - July 18, 2009) and Me & My Bag brand canvas stuff is 50% off too. They have items like bags, bibs, hats, and aprons in canvas that are fun to decorate, and they come in muslin, white, or black too. Half off makes them really cheap to stock up on.

Fabric Mart has 30% off their entire site, and 50% off certain items. What I like about their site is they show a lot of their fabric draped, so you can get a better idea of what you are buying.

Fabric.com always has great sales going on like their $1.95 clearance.

Hankcock is having a fleece sale this week.

Things we Learned

Things we learned at the first Sew Aiken meeting: The tables will bounce your sewing machine if you go too fast. There are only two electric outlets in the meeting room, if you have an extension cord you might want to bring it if you plan to plug in your sewing machine. If there is trail mix in the room Savana will try to consume it all. Don't bring more than you can carry in one trip up the stairs or elevator.

Since it was only Savana, Alexis, and I (Athena) we didn't do any Sew Aiken projects. Instead, I hemmed a dress for Savana while Alexis ironed the straps for it.

The next Sew Aiken meeting will be July 11th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Aiken County Public Meeting Room. There is a tomato festival at the farmers market that day, but all the good stuff will be gone by 10:00, so come join us!

Go to the Current Projects page to see what we will be doing and what you might need to bring. Don't forget to bring a yard or more of left over material you might have for the the Scrap Swap and/or any patterns you don't use for the Pattern Pass.

Hobby Lobby has McCall's patterns on sale for $.99 this week (June 22nd to June 27th). They only put them on sale every couple of months, so head over and get your limit of 10.

We are finally listed on BurdaStyle's sewing club page. It might be too late for the first meeting, but hopefully we'll get a few Burda buddies for the next meeting.

BurdaStyle Sewing Club

BurdaStyle is a great site to prowl for inspiration and free patterns. I (Athena) am a sucker for a patternless pattern and they have members posting them all the time. Like this awesome top/dress. And they have a sewpedia.

I would like to have a page on our site listing our favorite online and brick stores, sites, and blogs.

There is going to be a scrap swap. If you have 1 yard or less of fabric left over from a project or some material you will just never use bring it in and swap for another scrap.

Similar to the scrap swap will be the pattern pass. Bring in any patterns you don't or won't use anymore and trade with someone.

Any projects you would like to share.

I honestly don't know if we will get to any sewing on this first meeting, but I'm going to bring in my machine anyway, just in case.

Information about the library where we will be meeting.

I'm bringing a stack of sewing books that can be checked out from the library. If you don't have a library card and would like to check out some materials you will need to bring verification of name and address. More details.

The Aiken County Public Library opens at 10:00 a.m. on Saturdays. They do not open the door beforehand so there is no need to show up early.

Other Info

Guestbook.
I thought it would be nice to have a guestbook. It would be an easy way to get everyone's contact info and we could watch the group grow over time. It will be by the door, sign in and let us know who you are!

Refreshments.
It is very important to me that this sewing club stays free. Everyone will have to supply their own project materials, but it would be my honor to provide refreshments. If you have a speciality finger food that we would just die if we didn't get to try, by all means please bring it in. The more the merrier. If there is something you are allergic to or just having a craving for email me (Athena) or leave a comment.

First Post for Sew Aiken

First meeting of the Sew Aiken Club will be June 20th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Aiken County Public Library meeting room.

Patently waiting for the packet, approval, and listing from BurdaStyle. Lots of ideas for future projects. Might have to get started on that page right away. Definitely have two members to date, myself (Athena) and my daughter. LOL Agenda for the first meeting will be posted ~~when I make one~~ soon.
